The sound is dull and thick, indicating that the compaction is in place. Voids may exist in the sound cavity. These 'traditional methods' cannot replace laboratory testing, but they can detect obvious abnormalities in the first place. Asphalt concrete is the 'strength produced by compression', not the 'strength produced by mixing'. Those who call it 'concrete' know this in their hearts.
